Synthetic-fiber carpets and natural-fiber carpets often need different care. Depending on the type of stain to be removed, the difference between the two can be noticeable or it can be subtler. It is important to know:

  • What your carpet is made of
  • What type of stain or spot you are dealing with

This post focuses on how to remove dirt and mud stains from both synthetic and natural fiber carpets

Synthetic-Fiber

Follow these steps to clean synthetic-fiber carpets or rugs that are stained with dirt or mud.

  1. Vacuum as much of the loose, dry dirt up as possible (only vacuum the DRY stuff).
  2. Dip a white cloth (white is best because any colored cloth can bleed dye into carpet – not good!). into a detergent solution (see the end of this article for the recipe).
  3. Dab repeatedly on the stained carpet
  4. Press firmly with the cloth for several seconds
  5. Wait 15-20 minutes then soak up any remaining, undried detergent with a clean, dry cloth
  6. Dip another cloth (white again!) into warm water and dab and press.
  7. Repeat 1-6 as needed as long as the stain is lightening
